Lachlan Hillier Might Be PEI's Next Up
Every scout has a type he can't shake. Mine is the undersized guard who plays like nobody ever told him he was undersized.
Lachlan Hillier is that guy.
He's a 5'11" guard out of Charlottetown who plays at Colonel Gray and suits up for Team PEI. On paper, the size is the first thing you notice and the last thing he thinks about.
Start with the will to win, because that's what hits you first. Hillier is hard-nosed and slippery, and he has a competitive edge you can't coach into a kid. He doesn't care how big the guy guarding him is. Longer, stronger, taller, it makes no difference. He attacks them anyway.
The part that separates him is how he does it. He isn't just running into trouble and hoping. He works the defender, shifts him, and maneuvers him until he finds that glimpse of space, the one sliver a guard his size has to manufacture because nobody is going to hand it over. Then he gets his shot off. Over and over, he finds a way to get the look he wants.
All of it comes with real energy and real heart. He plays like every possession is the one that matters. When you give up inches every night, effort is how you stay in the fight, and Hillier plays like that's the only way he knows.
Let's be honest about the other side. He's super undersized, and any coach recruiting him is going to bring it up first. But talent travels, and so does toughness. The guards who last at the next level aren't always the biggest ones. They're the ones who can create their own space, compete every possession, and never get rattled by who's in front of them. Hillier checks all three.
That's why I think he could find a home on a U SPORTS roster. A coach looking for a guard who brings energy, craft, and a refusal to back down doesn't need him to be 6'3" to see the value.
The Island doesn't get talked about nearly enough in this game, and players like Hillier are part of the reason that needs to change. He's talented, he's fearless, and he's only going to get more dangerous with the ball in his hands.
Keep his name in your notebook. Lachlan Hillier just might be next up.
