Two Fists Balled Up: Judah Was the Defensive Player of the Weekend, and It Wasn't Close

Every event like this has its share of highlight-reel scorers, the guys who fill up a stat sheet and get the gym buzzing every time they touch the ball. Judah wasn't chasing any of that this weekend in Edmonton, and by the end of it, he didn't need to. Playing for One Prep, he put together the single best defensive performance of the entire event, and it genuinely wasn't close.

The style is unmistakable once you've seen it. Judah plays defense with two fists balled up, angry, mean, relentless, picking guards up full court and making every single possession a fight. It doesn't matter what the score is or what point in the game it is, that effort shows up on every trip down the floor, every time he's out there. Watching him work a ball handler is like watching a pest in the truest sense of the word, somebody whose entire job is to make the other team's best players uncomfortable, and he does that job better than anyone else who stepped on the floor this weekend.

It's easy for that kind of impact to get lost next to more specialized scorers, and One Prep had other guards this weekend with more polished offensive skill sets. But Judah's minutes told a different story. He wasn't a stopper who disappeared on the other end, either. When his shot was there, he made it. He got two feet into the paint and put pressure on the defense when the lane opened. He communicated constantly, the vocal, connective tissue kind of play that coaches notice even when the highlight reel doesn't. Not flashy, winning basketball, every possession, both ends of the floor.

It all came together in the last game of the weekend, against CTA, the toughest matchup on the schedule. That's where Judah put the exclamation point on it, locking in defensively from the opening possession to the final buzzer and making sure nobody left Edmonton without knowing his name. By the time the weekend wrapped, the label was earned. Judah was the defensive player of the event, and there wasn't a second name in the conversation.
