(2027) Owen Lopez 6'5: When Physicality Meets Skill
By Imran Brar
Owen Lopez (šššš) is something that came from out of this world. A high-flying 6'5 forward that can score at all three levels, create his own shot, and pairing that with his shot-blocking ability makes him a monster on both ends of the floor.
Lopez has the physical tools to be a force. The forward is a one-on-one problem for any matchup, and he's at his best attacking his man with a head of steam. His explosiveness and reach let him beat defenders off the dribble with ease. He uses his speed and size to get through the defense, finishing off one or two feet and creating downhill off a variety of euro steps and spins against the help side.
He lives in transition, where he pushes the pace and flies to put down monster dunks. His athleticism is what stands out. Whether he's throwing one down on the break or finishing from different angles at the rim against shot blockers, he always creates a scoring opportunity when pushing the break.
Shooting consistency is what surprised me most about Lopez. He's steady off the catch and can get into pull-ups in the midrange, which makes him a three-level scoring threat. That shot also helps him create off closeouts. Defenders have to play higher on him, which opens driving lanes and sets up even more offense off the catch.
Defensively, he has the tools to impact the other end of the floor. He has the body to protect the rim and slow the offense in transition. An agile and dynamic shot blocker, his speed and leaping ability allow him to chase down runners and pin their shots against the backboard. He's also very active on the glass, consistently boxing out his man and eating up rebounds.
Lopez pairs elite athleticism with a scoring game that's more complete than his highlights suggest. He can beat defenders off the bounce, finish through contact, and knock down shots off the catch and the pull-up. On defense, his shot blocking and rebounding give him real two-way value. If his shooting consistency holds as he develops, he'll be a prospect with a high ceiling and one to watch closely.
