Edmonton Metro Basketball: 2026–27 Men’s Senior Basketball Preview

Edmonton Metro has established itself as Alberta’s most consistent zone in high school basketball, enjoying an impressive run at the 4A and 5A provincial levels over the past five years. Programs such as St. Francis Xavier, Strathcona and Archbishop O’Leary have consistently competed among the province’s best, combining for multiple top-five provincial finishes. With a strong tradition of competition and a proven track record on the provincial stage, Edmonton Metro looks poised to continue its success in 2026–27.

Teams to Watch

Holy Trinity

Outlook: Potential Riser

Fresh off a 4A provincial championship, Holy Trinity enters the new season facing the challenge of replacing much of the core that powered last year’s title run. There will inevitably be questions surrounding a retooled roster, but the presence of Sky Dublin and a coaching staff familiar with winning gives Holy Trinity the potential to exceed expectations and remain a team to watch.

Player to Watch: Sky Dublin (Class of 2028)

Jasper Place

Outlook: Wild Card

Jasper Place is one of the more difficult teams to project heading into the season, with plenty of unanswered questions surrounding its roster. The potential for unexpected contributors to emerge makes this group an intriguing wild card. If the pieces come together and players establish themselves in key roles, Jasper Place could surprise a few teams along the way.

Leduc

Outlook: To Be Determined

After finishing seventh last season, Leduc enters the new campaign with plenty to prove. With several question marks surrounding the roster, it remains to be seen whether the team can build on last year’s result or take a step forward in the standings. Christian Lowe is a player to watch as Leduc looks to establish its identity and find its footing in the Metro.

Player to Watch: Christian Lowe (Class of 2028)

Ross Sheppard

Outlook: Potential playoff team with upside

Ross Sheppard faces an uphill climb after losing a star player to the prep circuit. Kent Muh will be a key figure, but the team’s success will likely depend on its guards taking on greater responsibility and finding consistent production throughout the lineup. If multiple players can step into larger roles, Ross Sheppard could remain competitive in a challenging Metro landscape.

Player to Watch: Kent Muh (Class of 2028)

Salisbury

Outlook: Potential Top-Five Team

Salisbury could emerge as one of the Metro’s most intriguing teams this season. A strong junior group is expected to make the jump to senior basketball, joining returning players from last year’s senior squad. If the younger talent can make a smooth transition and adapt to the demands of the senior game, Salisbury has the pieces to push its way into the top five.

Teams with Championship Aspirations

Archbishop O’Leary

Outlook: Top-Three Contender

Archbishop O’Leary enters the season with legitimate top-three aspirations, bringing back the core of their team for their senior campaign. The talent is there, but the question will be whether the Spartans can turn individual ability into collective success. Embracing defined roles, committing to team-first basketball and building chemistry will be critical if O’Leary is to translate its potential into results and make a serious push up the standings.

Players to Watch: Darion Nchelatebe (Class of 2028) and Isiah Bulgak (Class of 2028)

Harry Ainlay

Outlook: Top-Three Contender

Harry Ainlay has the talent to challenge near the top of the Metro standings, with young, skilled players such as Briar Ricci and Tavius Ford expected to play important roles. The biggest question is how quickly the group can adjust to the physicality, pace and consistency required at the senior level. If the transition goes smoothly, Harry Ainlay has the potential to establish itself as a serious contender.

Players to Watch: Briar Ricci (Class of 2029) and Tavius Ford (Class of 2029)

Strathcona

Outlook: Championship Contender

Strathcona enters the season with legitimate championship aspirations after finishing third at provincials and runner-up at the city championships last year. With talent throughout the roster and an established coaching foundation, the team has the pieces to make another deep postseason run. The challenge now is turning last season’s success into something more. If Strathcona can maintain consistency and deliver its best basketball when it matters most, a championship is well within reach.

Players to Watch: Hayden Spronk (Class of 2028), Tyler Maglesceau (Class of 2029) and Shane Okolie (Class of 2029)

St. Francis Xavier

Outlook: Championship DNA Remains

After capturing three consecutive city championships and finishing as provincial runners-up, St. Francis Xavier enters a new chapter. The departures of head coach Brad Farish and key player Elijah Thomas leave significant shoes to fill. However, the program’s winning culture and returning contributors provide a foundation to build on. The challenge will be finding new leaders and establishing an identity capable of keeping St. FX among the Metro’s elite.

Players to Watch: Lucas Thomas (Class of 2029), Clyde Mbachu (Class of 2028) and Justice Arciaga (Class of 2028)

The Final Word

While the Edmonton Metro race looks wide open heading into the 2026–27 season, Strathcona enters as the team to beat. Coming off a third-place finish at provincials and a city championship runner-up finish, Scona has the experience, talent and coaching to take the next step. The competition will be fierce, with O’Leary, Harry Ainlay and St. Francis Xavier all capable of challenging for the top spot, but Strathcona has the strongest case as the preseason favourite. The question now is whether Scona can turn last season’s near-misses into a championship run and establish itself as the team to beat in Edmonton Metro.
